Why detox matters – and how we can help

If you’re reading this article, there’s a good chance either you or someone you care about is going through a rough time. It could be because of a drug addiction, or alcohol, or maybe it’s because of feelings of being stuck. So where to next?

A detox retreat might sound scary to some people, but it’s the perfect first step when you’re ready to make a change. It’s where healing begins.

It might sound clinical or scary, but detox is actually a really important first step when someone’s ready to start making a change. It’s where the healing begins — not just for the body, but for the whole person.

Let’s talk about detox, what it really is, why it matters, and how The Bardo can help you or your loved one through it — without judgement or shame.

What is detox?

Detox, short for detoxification, and it’s the process of clearing drugs, alcohol or other substances out of your system. While it sounds simple, it’s a lot more complicated, because when you’ve been using it for a while, your body gets used to functioning with those substances in the background.

After stopping, your system needs time to adjust. That’s where withdrawal symptoms can start — anything from shakes, sweats and nausea to anxiety, trouble sleeping or intense cravings. And for some people, those symptoms can be serious, even dangerous.

That’s why supervised, professional detox is so important. It’s not just about “getting clean”,  it’s about doing it safely, in a way that supports both your physical and mental health.

Detox – your journey to recovery

Detox is the first chapter in your journey to recovery. It’s the start of the process and gives you a solid place to start as you recover at our detox retreat. There are a few reasons why detox is so important:

  • It gets your body back to baseline. That foggy, run-down, sick feeling? It will go away. Not overnight, but when it does, it’s easier to start thinking clearly again.
  • It gives you the best chance of long-term recovery. Detox sets the stage for everything that comes after — therapy, rehab, building new habits, reconnecting with yourself. Without it, you’re not giving yourself the best possible start.
  • It can be life-saving. Some withdrawals can be dangerous without medical support. Detox helps you get through it safely.

What detox looks like at The Bardo

Once you decide to visit our detox retreat, our team will conduct a confidential intake assessment over the phone. We’ll develop a detox plan that fits your exact needs, then you’ll have an appointment with our Nurse Practitioner who will assess your readiness, prescribe any necessary medications to safely and comfortably detox, and prepare everything for your stay.

Admission: Our team will arrange transport to bring you to The Bardo – your own private detox retreat where healing begins. You’ll have your own room and ensuite bathroom, giving you the space to rest and focus entirely on your recovery.

All of your medications are carefully managed and administered according to your personalised plan, and you’ll be supported 24/7 by our experienced team.

Worried about privacy? Your privacy matters deeply to us, that’s why our location and your stay are kept completely confidential until you’re ready to begin your journey.

Length of stay: At The Bardo, detox typically lasts a minimum of 7 days, depending on the substance and your health needs. If you experience withdrawal, our team is always nearby to support you, and medications are available to ease physical discomfort.

Daily therapies: Each day, you’ll have access to a full suite of therapies, including:

  • Counselling (CBT, ACT, Mindfulness, Motivational Interviewing)
  • Massage therapy

After detox – What’s next?

Your journey doesn’t end with detox, it’s just the beginning. We encourage all our visitors to continue their healing in our residential rehabilitation program where you’ll have the space and tools to rebuild and grow.

You’ll also receive a detailed recovery plan, follow-up counselling sessions, and the option to return for visits (by arrangement). Our phone line remains open for support, even after your stay.
