How to stay motivated when healing gets hard

No one said healing was easy. Unfortunately there’s no quick fix or magic wand to wave, but there are some ways to keep going, even when you experience tough days.

At The Bardo, we understand that there’s no straight line in recovery, and draw upon our experience to help our guests stay motivated when healing gets hard. We believe that when individuals are given the right tools and strategies, they can overcome setbacks, build resilience, and keep moving forward on their journey toward lasting recovery and well-being.

The path to recovery

Of course, the path to recovery looks different for everyone, and healing can take us along unexpected routes. It’s common to lack motivation, which may show up as emotional fatigue, triggers, or self-doubt. You might also feel guilt or shame as you face challenging aspects of your life. During these times, self-compassion is essential, it’s vital to celebrate the small wins along the way and acknowledge each step you take toward your goals.

Here are some tips to stay motivated:

Set realistic goals: When you break larger recovery goals into more manageable steps, it doesn’t feel so overwhelming.  At The Bardo, we encourage our guests to set realistic goals and always celebrate the small victories. These small successes help keep momentum as you traverse the sometimes challenging healing path.

Useful tools include:

  • Journals –  a safe space to express thoughts, feelings, and insights as they arise.
  • Progress trackers – a visual way to see how far you’ve come.
  • Daily reflections – a moment to pause, reset, and recognise what’s working and not working.

Build a support network: When it comes to healing, the role of supportive family, friends and peers shouldn’t be underestimated. Asking for help is a sign of strength and this support will help to keep you motivated. The Bardo approach includes professional guidance, therapy and encouragement every step of the way.

Personal coping strategies: On the more challenging days, personal coping strategies can help you stay motivated. We recommend mindfulness, meditation, breathing exercises and physical activity to help you stay on track. You need to find something that personally resonates with you, because what works for one person doesn’t necessarily work for another. Along your journey, you may have to adapt these strategies as needed.

Reflection and routine: We find that many of our guests thrive on daily routines that reinforce their recovery goals. Little tasks such as practicing gratitude, journaling or checking in with a mentor or therapist can be extremely helpful. Recognising your progress, even when it is slow, can build motivation and increase resilience.

Maintain perspective: At The Bardo, we like to think of setbacks as a natural part of recovery, not a failure. When you reframe challenges as opportunities to learn or moments for growth, the weight of them can feel a little lighter. A slip-up doesn’t erase your progress, it’s simply part of the process. The key is to keep showing up for yourself, even on the days that feel hard.
