Gambling and mental health: Why it’s more than just a habit

Gambling is often seen as just a habit, something people should be able to stop if they really want to. Unfortunately, this assumption shapes public perception, creating the belief that gambling problems are simply a matter of self-control.

The reality, however, is much more complex. For many individuals, gambling isn’t about the act itself. It’s more often than not connected to deeper emotional or psychological factors that influence why the behaviour continues and when people decide to stop.

An important question: what is gambling doing for you?

We tend to jump to the question of why someone gambles, but you can introduce a different question: what purpose is gambling serving? Behaviours that look irrational on the surface often serve an emotional function.

If you want help with a gambling addiction, it’s important to explore what gambling is doing for you. Is it:

  • A distraction from stress.
  • Temporary excitement.
  • An escape from difficult emotions.
  • Relief from boredom or loneliness.
  • A source of control.

The relationship between gambling and mental health

Psychologically, gambling can co-exist with several conditions such as, anxiety, depression, trauma, chronic stress, and emotional isolation. Gambling can sometimes become a response to internal pressure rather than simply a financial risk-taking behaviour.

Gambling addiction – a cycle hard to break

When we talk about support for a gambling addiction, we need to recognise the interaction between emotion, behaviour and consequence. Gambling can soon create an unhealthy loop of emotional discomfort, gambling to change the feeling, temporary relief or stimulation, financial or emotional consequences, and then increased stress or shame.

Mental health struggles can intensify the cycle, making it even harder for individuals to step away from the behaviour without the right support and understanding.

Shame and silence in addiction

People struggling with gambling addiction can often experience:

  • Embarrassment
  • Secrecy
  • Fear of judgement
  • Isolation

Staying silent can delay individuals seeking support and add further to mental health challenges. It’s important to recognise that gambling harm often grows in isolation.

Recovery isn’t just about stopping the spending

Recovery isn’t just about debt management, blocking your betting apps and putting in place financial restrictions. Obviously, these things can help, but they don’t address the emotional drivers behind the behaviour. It’s important to access psychological support, regulate your emotions and address the underlying stress or trauma that you have experienced.

Reframing your gambling struggles with compassion

At The Bardo, we like to help people shift their perspective. Instead of seeing gambling as a failure of self-control, at our Gold Coast retreat we view it as a signal that something deeper needs attention. This perspective encourages understanding rather than blame.
